A Dhaka court has allowed police to question two suspects for four days in a case over the recovery of the dismembered body of Suraiya Akter aka Falani, in the capital’s Sabujbagh.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order on Thursday following the petition by the investigating officer in the case, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Mominul Islam of the Prosecution Police.

The suspects have been identified as Manjurul Islam Rabbi, the husband of Falani's friend Nusrat Jahan Shahida, and his associate Shaon, who is alleged to have taken part in the murder alongside Shahida.

Police arrested them from the Sabujbagh area on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the case investigating officer and Sabujbagh Police Station SI Noor-e Alam Siddiqui, presented the accused in court and petitioned for them to be remanded for 10 days for interrogation.

The suspects’ lawyer Khalilur Rahman Asad moved for the remand petition to be scrapped and sought bail.

After hearing, the court ordered the accused to be remanded to police custody for four days.

On Aug 6, police recovered a severed head and two hands from under a bridge near a cattle farm in the Madartek Baganbari area of Sabujbagh.

The body parts were later identified by the victim’s parents as belonging to the 19-year-old Falani. Falani was the daughter of Bazlul Bepari, who hailed from Dhalikandi village in Munshiganj.

SI Rashedul Hasan filed a case against unknown persons at Sabujbagh Police Station over the incident on the same day.

Police arrested Falani’s friend Nusrat Jahan Shahida, 19, from the Shahjahanpur cemetery area around 8:30pm on Friday. Later, around 9:45pm, they arrested Faruk alias Jamai Faruk, 45; Sujon, 20; Mamun, 20; and Rafi Islam alias Bappi, 19, from the Baganbari bridge.

They were produced before a court on Saturday, with police seeking 10 days of remand for each of them. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam granted four days of remand for each of them.

On Aug 5, Khilgaon police arrested a suspect named Rocky and sentenced him to three months of rigorous imprisonment through a mobile court.

Rocky is currently imprisoned in Keraniganj Central Jail. On Sunday, the investigating officer in the Falani case sought to have Rocky officially arrested in connection with her murder.

In the presence of the accused, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir ordered him to be shown arrested on Monday. After that, the investigating officer petitioned for him to be remanded for 10 days, but eventually a four-day remand was granted.

On Wednesday, investigating officer Noor Alam presented six suspects before the court. Among them, Shahida and Kabir Hossain, 18, agreed to give confessional statements. The investigating officer then petitioned for their statements to be recorded and for Faruk, Sujon, Mamun, Rafi, and Rocky to be detained in jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam ordered the recording of the confessional statements of the two suspects and sent them to jail. The same court also ordered the other four accused to be sent to jail.

The motive for Falani's murder was revealed in the confessional statements.

Regarding the incident, SI Noor Alam said: "This murder was committed out of personal enmity. Shahida's husband Rabbi got involved in an extramarital relationship with Falani. Shahida then learnt of it. On the day of the incident, Shahida saw Falani and Rabbi being intimate. Shahida immediately stabbed Falani to death with a knife. Later, Shahida's friend Shaon severed the victim's head to hide the body."
