A Dhaka court has remanded Meheraz Islam, the key suspect in the case over stabbing Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez to death, for five days.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub’s court granted police custody of Meheraz for interrogation after a hearing on Friday.

Banani police Inspector AKM Main Uddin, investigation officer of the case, had petitioned for a 10-day remand.

Lawyer MA Malek Talukder filed a petition to scrap the remand and receive bail on behalf of Meheraz.

He said at the hearing, "Several other suspects have already been arrested and have been remanded in this incident. Two of the accused have confessed their guilt and given statements in court stating who committed the incident.

“Meheraz was not at the scene of the incident. He was not seen in the video footage of the incident either. Since the other suspects are his friends, he has been implicated in this case on the basis of speculation. If he needs to be interrogated, an order can be granted to interrogate him at the jail gate."

After the hearing, the court ordered he be remanded for questioning for five days.

Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain confirmed the remand decision.

Meheraz could be seen crying in court during the hearing. However, he did not say anything. He is the prime suspect in the case.

Meheraz was arrested from Gaibandha at around 12:45am on Wednesday.

Two other suspects - Mahathir Hasan and Al Kamal Sheikh – had previously confessed to the crime and gave their statements to the court. They are currently in jail.

Alvi Hosan Junaid, Al Amin Sunny and Hridoy Miyaji, joint member secretary of the Banani Thana of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, have also been remanded for questioning.

A clash broke out between students of the Department of English and the Department of Textile Engineering of Primeasia University in Banani after 4pm on Apr 19. Parvez, a student of the Department of Textile Engineering, was stabbed to death by students of the Department of English. The deceased's cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a case with the Banani Police Station over the incident on Apr 20.

Parvez, 24, was a third-year student of the Department of Textile Engineering at the university. He hailed from Mymensingh’s Bhaluka.
