Eight construction workers have been killed in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a truck in Sylhet.
The accident occurred on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in the Telibazar Bridge area of South Surma Upazila around 6am on Sunday, according to Gazi Mahbubur Rahman, chief of South Surma Police Station.
All the victims were passengers in the pickup, police said.
Four of the dead have been identified as Badrul, 30, Md Suruj Ali, 60, Munni, 35, and Faridul, 35.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Md Riazul Kabir said several construction workers were travelling from Sylhet towards Sunamganj in the pickup when it collided head-on with a jackfruit-laden truck coming from Chattogram in the Teli Bazar area.
“Four people died on the spot and three more passed away after being taken to the hospital. Several others are in critical condition and are receiving treatment."
Another victim died after he made the comment.
Both drivers fled after the accident, but police have detained the truck’s helper, Riazul added.
