Former war crimes prosecutor Tureen Afroz has been shown arrested in a murder case filed over an incident during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order after hearing a petition of the case investigation officer on Monday.

Barrister Tureen Afroz was arrested on the night of Apr 7 from her Uttara residence in connection with the "attempt-to-murder" case of a student named Abdul Jabbar during last year’s July Uprising protests. She was sent to jail on Apr 12 after she was remanded for four days.

Later, investigation officer of the case, CID Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarkar petitioned to show Tureen arrested in the murder case of Anwar Hossain Patwary. The court fixed Apr 21 for hearing the petition against the former prosecutor.

Tureen was presented to the court in the morning. After hearing arguments, the court granted the petition to show her arrested. Tureen was seen smiling in court.

According to the case documents, Anwar was shot dead in the Mirpur roundabout area on Aug 5 last year, the day the Awami League government fell. Anwar's father Al Amin Patwary filed a case with the Mirpur Model Police Station over his death.

Lawyer Tureen served as a prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal, formed in 2010 to try war crimes.

She played a key role in several significant cases, including the trial of Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam.

Tureen was removed from her position on Nov 11, 2019, by the then Awami League government following a clandestine meeting with Muhammad Wahidul Haque, the former director general (DG) of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Department of Immigration and Passports, during his ongoing 1971 war crimes case.

She had sought the Awami League's nomination to contest the 2018 general election.

After the fall of the Awami League government last year, several cases were filed against the lawyer, similar to cases filed against others with Awami League ties.
