A policeman among four people killed in a shooting at a skyscraper in New York’s Manhattan hailed from Bangladesh.
Didarul Islam, 36, had been working as a member of the New York Police Department (NYPD) for three and a half years.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica S Tisch says Didarul’s wife is eight months pregnant. They have two young sons, with another child on the way.
A gunman entered a skyscraper housing the offices of several financial firms and the National Football League (NFL) on Monday and opened fire, killing four before taking his own life.
CNN says that Didarul was not on police duty at the time of the incident and was working as security in the building.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference on Monday night that Didarul had immigrated from Bangladesh and settled in New York. He was his parent’s only child.
The mayor, who met Didarul’s family after the incident, said:
"He loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person."
"He embodies what the city is all about. He was a true-blue New Yorker not only in the uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving his city. Early tonight, I met with the officer's family and told them he was a hero and we admire him for putting his life on the line."
New York Police Commissioner Tisch said, “He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”
