A Narayanganj court has sentenced three men to death for killing a private university student during a mugging in the city.
Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shameem Azad handed down the verdict on Monday in the presence of the convicts, court police Inspector Abdus Samad said.
The convicts are Md Anik, 27, Akash Khan, 36, also known as Saidur Rahman, and Babu, 45, alias “Chandi Babu” and “Taikka Babu”.
Police say they were members of a mugging gang.
The victim, 20-year-old Md Wazed Simanto, was a Computer Science and Engineering student at American International University, Bangladesh (AIUB).
According to the case documents, Simanto left home at around 5:30am on Dec 12, 2024, to go to university.
He was attacked by muggers near the Ali Ahmed Chunka City Library.
The muggers stabbed him, took his smartphone and Tk 1,800, then fled.
Family members took him to hospital after finding him injured on the road.
He died two days later while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Simanto’s father Alam Parvez filed a murder case against unidentified muggers.
Police submitted the chargesheet to the court on Jul 31, 2025, accusing the three men of killing Simanto during the mugging.
The prosecution said 27 witnesses, including the complainant and investigating officer, testified in the case.
The court handed down the death sentences based on the evidence.
Simanto’s father welcomed the verdict and called for its swift execution.
