Students of Rajshahi University have protested against a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader over an “offensive comment” on female students summoned to the hall office, leading to his suspension from the organisation.

The protest took place on Wednesday night in front of July 36 Hall, where the students gathered in anger over the remark.

They demand strict punishment for cyber bullying, saying such abuse discourages women from joining politics

On Monday night, the hall administration issued a notice requiring 91 female students to appear before the provost’s office for returning late to the residential halls. Students numbered 1–45 were asked to appear on Tuesday, while numbers 46–91 were told to attend on Wednesday at 4pm.

The notice sparked criticism and was withdrawn by Tuesday afternoon.

Before the withdrawal, Rajshahi University Reporters Unity published the information on their Facebook page with a photo card. The card was then shared in a Facebook group named Rajshahi University Parliament by Jannatul Nayeem, vice-president of the university chapter of the BNP student front.

Under the post, Anisur Rahman Milon, vice-president of Chhtra Dal’s Shah Makhdum Hall unit, wrote: “These are not female students, these are unpaid sex workers.”

Milon is a student of the philosophy department from the 2018–19 session.

Attempts to contact him for comment were unsuccessful, and after the controversy, he deactivated his Facebook account.
