Seven people have been injured in a fire at a petrol pump in Dhaka’s Mohakhali.

The incident reportedly occurred at a station named Gulshan Service Centre in Amtoli on Tuesday.

The victims were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery afterwards, according to Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute’s emergency department.

“Seven people were brought in with burns around 1:30pm. They were injured in a fire at a pump in Mohakhali’s Amtoli,” he said.

A senior staff nurse at the emergency department said their condition was "not good".

An employee of Gulshan Service Centre said three people had come to clean one of the petrol station’s empty oil tanks.

“Around 1pm, during the work, the gas that had accumulated in the tank caught fire. The three, along with some of our staff, suffered burns. They have been taken to hospital,” he said.

“I can't say how the fire started. Perhaps it somehow sparked during the work,” he added.

Fuel sales have been suspended in a part of the petrol station.

As the workers managed to put out the flames themselves, the Fire Service has no record of the incident.
