Police have detained one person following a flash procession by the Awami League’s affiliate Swechchha Sebak League, whose activities are currently banned, in Dhaka’s Uttara.
Around 7:45am on Friday, the procession, organised under the banner of Dhaka North Swechchha Sebak League, set off from Jasim Uddin in Uttara, moved along Airport Road, and headed towards the RAB-1 office.
Participants scattered and fled after police and local residents spotted the procession and gave chase.
Uttara East Police chief Morshed Alam said one person was detained at the scene.
He said, “Police chased the participants of the flash procession and detained one person along with the banner. We are verifying his name and identity.”
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India on Aug 5, 2024, after a mass uprising forced her from power.
Three days later, after the interim government was formed, authorities began to arrest senior Awami League leaders—including ministers, state ministers and influential members of parliament one after another.
Several leaders of other parties that had been allied with the Awami League were also arrested.
Most remaining senior Awami League leaders are in hiding and have stayed away from regular political activity as a result.
Hasina and other Awami League leaders face trial over allegations of crimes against humanity, including the killing of hundreds of people during the suppression of 2024 July Uprising.
The government has banned all activities of the party until the trials are concluded.
Even so, flash processions by Awami League activists continue to surface occasionally across Dhaka and elsewhere in the country, with police sometimes reporting arrests in their wake.
