A Chattogram court has accepted a chargesheet against 39 people, including Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesman Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, over the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin issued the order on Monday after a hearing attended by the victim’s father, Jamal Uddin.
The court also issued arrest warrants for suspects still on the run.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said that investigators had sought to drop the name of suspect Sukanta Dutta, citing incomplete details. However, the court ruled to keep him on the list.
During the hearing, Raihanul said: “Sukanta Dutta is named in 8 cases including weapons, drugs, theft, and robbery in various police stations of Chattogram. The investigation report also mentioned Sukanta's involvement in the incident.
"After the incident, photos of Sukanta with the main suspects went viral. Therefore, I'm request that he be included as an accused."
Earlier, an indictment hearing was scheduled on Aug 10 but the plaintiff was not present on that day. The court issued a summons for the plaintiff to attend the hearing and rescheduled the hearing on Aug 25.
On Nov 29, 2024, Alif’s father Jamal filed a murder case with Chattogram’s Kotwali Police Station, naming 31 people and listing another 15-16 as unidentified suspects. All the accused in the case were residents of Bandel Sevak Colony adjacent to the city's Rangam Convention Hall.
Assistant Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman of Chattogram police’s Kotwali zone, the investigating officer in the case, said on Jul 1:
“Of the 31 individuals initially named in the first information report (FIR), three have been recommended for discharge. The remaining 28 are named in the chargesheet, along with 10 others who emerged during the investigation."
At least 19 of the 39 people indicted on Monday are absconding.
