A Dhaka court has sentenced three people, including a recent convert to Islam, to life imprisonment over the recovery of 14,000 yaba pills from Rayerbagh about 18 months ago

Dhaka Second Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Arunabh Chakraborty gave the verdict on Tuesday.

The convicts are Sanjay Das alias Md Hossain (converted Muslim), Kabir Molla, and Md Eshak.

State lawyer Md Abdul Nur Bhuiyan said each individual was sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine of Tk 100,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in six months of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the case dossier, police seized a Toyota Land Cruiser in Rayerbagh on Nov 30, 2023.

They recovered 14,000 yaba pills from the vehicle and arrested the three occupants.

Jatrabari Police Station Inspector Shafiqul Islam filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act on the same day.

After the investigation, Sub-Inspector Md Nur Alam Siddique submitted the chargesheet against the three to the court on Feb 13 last year.

The court framed the charges on Sept 1, 2024, and ordered the trial to begin.

During the trial, seven of the 12 witnesses testified.

After hearing the defence and the accused’s arguments, the court announced its verdict on Tuesday.
