A case has been lodged following the shooting of a senior National Citizen Party (NCP) labour wing leader in Khulna, with police naming a district youth wing leader as the prime suspect.

On Tuesday, Rahima Akter Fahima, the wife of Jatiya Sramik Shakti Khulna divisional chief Motaleb Shikdar, started the case with Sonadanga Police, naming Tanima Tanni, a joint member secretary of the district unit, as the prime suspect.

Chief of Sonadanga Police Rafiqul Islam said Tanima was named alongside seven to eight other unidentified individuals.

“Tanima has been shown arrested,” he said.

Motaleb, 42, was targeted in the shooting, which occurred on Dec 22 at a flat at Sonadanga. The bullet struck near his ear and exited through the other side.

Police said the incident occurred inside a flat rented by Tanima.

Later, police reported recovering yaba tablets, empty liquor bottles and bullet casings from the flat.

Motaleb is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors cleared him of danger.

City Detective Police arrested Tanima on Monday night from Tutpara under Sadar Police Station and handed her over to Sonadanga police on Tuesday morning.

Officer Rafiqul said, “When she fell ill at the station’s victim support centre in the evening, Tanima was taken to the prison cell at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Motaleb’s condition has improved.”
