Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that he will take initiatives to reform existing laws to put an end to mob culture.
"The existing laws will be amended and supplemented to ensure they are up-to-date,” he said as a special guest at Police Week-2026 event at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday.
He also gave assurances that the government would fulfil reasonable demands, after considering its financial stability and capacity, in order to develop the police force as a modern force oriented towards the public.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was the chief guest at the event. Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir, and Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khandaker Rafiqul Islam also spoke at the event.
The minister said, "Currently, many police constables do not get further promotions even when they serve for 40 years before retirement. Therefore, after considering special policies and satisfactory service records, some police members will be promoted from constable to the honourary assistant sub-inspector (ASI) post, from assistant sub-inspector (ASI) to the honourary sub-inspector (SI) post, and from sub-inspector (SI) to honourary inspector post during retirement."
The government is considering providing overtime allowance based on special policies for police members who work extra working hours to make policing more dynamic and effective, he said.
It will help boosting morale and improving the quality of service, Salahuddin said,
"In this case, overtime allowance may be considered from the police inspector level to constable posts."
The home minister said the current government is sincere in ensuring the police hospital is more modern and up-to-date and in resolving the housing problem.
Stating that the law-and-order situation in the country has visibly improved in the last two months, he said: "A special operation is underway against identified criminals, extortionists and drug dealers to further improve law and order."
"A committee has already been formed to put together more up-to-date laws to prevent gambling, online gambling, cybercrime and money laundering. Laws will be formulated as per the recommendations of this committee."
The minister urged the police force to perform its duties according to public expectations and aspirations.
