Md Aminul Islam, the newly appointed chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), has pledged to ensure that offenders face the full force of the law while protecting the innocent from harassment.
Speaking after formally taking over from his predecessor, Md Tajul Islam, on Monday, he underscored the prosecution’s responsibility to act with integrity, fairness and impartiality.
Asked whether he had received any instructions or directives from the law minister or government officials, Aminul said: “The tribunal operates strictly under the law. Nothing beyond it can be acceptable, and no directive outside the law will be acceptable during my tenure.
“According to the law, justice will proceed as prescribed; I have received no instructions beyond that.”
Aminul assumed the role following the removal of Tajul from the position, expressing his commitment to perform the role in accordance with the aspirations of those who were killed or injured during the July Uprising, describing the responsibility as highly significant.
“This is an extremely important duty. I aim to serve the tribunal in line with the hopes of the July slain, so that ongoing and upcoming trials are conducted earnestly,” he said.
He paid tribute to all who sacrificed their lives during Bangladesh’s independence struggle, including the mothers and sisters whose honour was risked for freedom.
He also expressed gratitude to the late president Ziaur Rahman, former prime minister Khaleda Zia, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Aminul also acknowledged his predecessor Tajul as a friend, saying: “I am grateful to him for handing over this responsibility.”
Addressing the suspects before the tribunal, he said: “Let it be clear: those who are innocent will not face harassment through the prosecution.”
On allegations of financial misconduct against some prosecutors, he added: “Today [Monday] is my first day. I will not comment on these now. If such matters arise, I will deal with them appropriately.”
