Ramisa’s family hopes for speedy justice after police file chargesheet within five days

“We want the trial to conclude as quickly as possible,” says the father

The father of 8-year-old Ramisa Akter has expressed satisfaction after police filed charges against the main suspect and his wife within five days of the child’s “rape” and “murder” in Mirpur’s Pallabi.

With no objections to the police investigation, the grieving father on Sunday said he is now resting his faith on the prime minister's assurance of a speedy trial.

The “rape” and brutal “murder” of the second-grade student sparked nationwide outrage.

On May 21, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the victim’s family at their home in Pallabi Section-11 to offer his condolences and promised that the perpetrators would face swift justice.

Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station, the investigating officer, submitted the chargesheet on Sunday to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque.

"The charges of rape and murder against Sohel Rana, and the charge of abetment against his wife Swapna Akter, have been fully proven," the officer said.

The case was transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal under Judge Masrur Salekin.

The tribunal accepted the chargesheet and scheduled the indictment hearing for Jun 1.

Ramisa’s father Abdul Hannan Mollah told bdnews24.com, "The police have done their part by filing the chargesheet, now we want the trial to conclude as quickly as possible.”

Police recovered Ramisa's body from her neighbour’s apartment in Pallabi on the afternoon of May 19.

Swapna was detained at the scene, while Sohel was arrested later that evening from Fatullah in Narayanganj.

The victim's father filed a formal case the following day.

On May 20, Sohel confessed to the crime in court.

The chargesheet also revealed that Sohel had a daughter from a previous marriage before marrying Swapna.
