The High Court is set to deliver its ruling on Wednesday on a petition challenging the swearing-in of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

After a hearing on Tuesday, the bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debasish Roy Choudhury scheduled the ruling for Wednesday afternoon.

Lawyer Mohammad Hossain argued for the petitioner, while AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaysar Kamal represented Ishraque.

The Election Commission (EC) issued a gazette notification on Apr 27 naming Ishraque as the mayor, based on the ruling of the electoral tribunal.

On 14 May, Supreme Court lawyer and Dhaka South resident Md Mamunur Rashid filed the writ plea, seeking to bar the swearing-in.

The DSCC labour union activists have warned that all civic services in Dhaka South will be halted if Ishraque is not sworn in as mayor by 10am on Wednesday.

Ishraque’s supporters, staging a sit-in outside Nagar Bhaban since last Wednesday, have backed the union’s call.

The ongoing protest has crippled operations at the city corporation headquarters, halting official work and leaving residents stranded without essential services.
