A Dhaka court has sentenced four men, including two siblings, to life imprisonment for the murder of a man, identified only as Jabed, in Keraniganj over two decades ago.
Judge Abdullah Al Masud of the Dhaka Seventh Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Thursday.
The convicts are Delwar Hossain and his brother Habibullah, identified by a single name, along with their neighbours Sirajul Islam and Deen Islam.
All four reside in Rasulpur, located in Keraniganj’s Abdullahpur.
In addition to their life sentences, the court fined each convict Tk 10,000. Failure to pay will result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
According to Bench Assistant Manik, identified with a single name, the convicts are currently absconding.
The victim, Jabed, worked at a betel leaf stall owned by one Nur Hossain Babu.
On Mar 18, 2003, the convicts -- three of whom were relatives of the victim -- lured Jabed away under the pretext of watching a movie at a local theatre.
The prosecution said Jabed was taken to the theatre in a rickshaw pulled by Deen Islam.
His body was recovered from a nearby river by local residents the following morning.
While Nur initially filed an unnatural death case, Jabed’s mother, Amina Begum, suspected foul play involving Nur and the others due to a long-standing land dispute with Jabed’s father.
She later filed a murder case in court.
In April 2005, police submitted a chargesheet against five individuals.
In May 2006, the court framed charges against the four convicts while acquitting Nur.
During the trial, the court recorded testimonies of six witnesses.
Since the accused remained at large throughout the proceedings, they were unable to provide a defence statement before the court reached its final decision on Thursday.
