The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said the 14-year-old schoolgirl found with her throat slit at her home in Banasree was killed after turning down “persistent advances” from a family employee.
The RAB revealed the matter after arresting the key suspect in the murder, 28-year-old Milon Mallik, who was an employee at the restaurant owned by the victim’s father.
Milon had been on the run since the murder. He was arrested on Sunday night in Bara Singha under the Bagerhat Sadar Police Station.
RAB held a media briefing at its media centre at the Karwanbazar on Monday afternoon.
As the restaurant employee, Milon had access to the residence, said Lt Col Fayezul Arefin, the commanding officer of RAB-3.
Milon had been making an “indecent proposal” to the girl over the past few days, he said, adding the day before the murder the victim had rebuked Milon for insisting on her accepting the proposal.
Milon used a kitchen knife to slit the throat of the girl the next day, RAB said.
The body of the student was found at the “Preetom Villa” building in South Banasree’s A Block late on Saturday afternoon. The 17-year-old girl was a 10th grader at Radiant School and College.
At the time of the killing, the victim’s parents and brother were at their ancestral home of Habiganj. Her older sister, Shobha Akhter, had gone to the gym that afternoon. She returned home to find her sister dead and called police.
The victim’s father Md Shojib filed a case at Khilgaon Police Station on Saturday night over the incident. One or more unnamed suspects were accused in the case, but no one was listed by name.
The victim’s family believes Milon was involved in the killing, as he was caught on a CCTV camera entering the house shortly before the body was recovered.
The case documents say that Shojib, the victim’s father, owned a restaurant named Shahjalal Hotel in front of their house. He, his son Shakil, and their employees ran the store. On Jan 7, Shojib took his wife and son to Habiganj to address some land-related issues. His two daughters were left at home.
Only Milon stayed behind after Shojib had gone home, closing his business and allowing leave to his three other hotel employees, according to police. Milon visited Sojib’s house to collect food.
Fayezul said, “On the day of the incident, Milon entered the house at 1:36pm and left at 1:41pm with food, along with the victim’s sister, Shobha.”
The assailant entered the residence again at 2:25pm while Shobha was at the gym and left around 2:45pm.
Milon confessed to the murder, RAB said.
“Milon decided to take revenge after being turned down and scolded,” said Fayezul.
On the day of the incident, RAB said, Milon went to the victim’s house with a nylon rope and repeated the immoral proposal to her.
He tied the rope around the victim’s neck and eventually used the kitchen knife to kill her as she screamed.
The murder suspect also confessed to stealing money from the house before escaping. RAB seized weapons used in the murder.
