Former inspector general of police (IGP) Enamul Haque has died at the age of 88.
He passed around 5:30am on Sunday at a hospital in Dhaka, according to a statement from the Police Headquarters.
Enamul was the uncle of Rehan Asif Asad, an advisor to the prime minister, who holds the rank of a state minister.
His Namaz-e-Janaza, or funeral prayer, will be held at Rajarbagh after Zuhr prayers, the statement said.
The former IGP served as a member of the Law Commission from 2004 to 2007. He served as inspector general of police from October 1991 to July 1992.
Writer Anamika Haq Lily is his wife. The couple had a daughter and two sons. His ancestral home was in Rajshahi’s Godagari.
In addition to serving as commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, he has also served as the principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy.
