A lawyer has been accused of assaulting a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activist after branding him a "fascist" in Lakshmipur.

The alleged assault took place on Thursday evening at Bhabaniganj Chowrasta, and a written complaint was filed with Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station later that night, its chief Wahid Parvez said.

Victim Md Sharif also alleged that his motorcycle and mobile phone were smashed during the attack.

Anisul Islam, a lawyer at Lakshmipur District and Sessions Judges Court, denied the allegations.

"I met Sharif. He's a drug addict. A certain faction is running a smear campaign against me," he said.

Sharif, admitted to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for treatment, said he was riding his motorcycle to buy fish feed when Anisul and several associates blocked his path.

Before he could react, Anisul allegedly began punching him indiscriminately, shouting "you're a fascist".

Sharif said he and Anisul, residents of the same area, have had a long-running dispute over ancestral land, with a case still pending in court.

He alleged Anisul had repeatedly threatened him over the dispute.

Union BNP president Haji Nurul Alam confirmed Sharif is an active party activist.

Lakshmipur District Bar Association President Manirul Islam Hawlader said he had heard about the incident and would take it up for investigation once a written complaint was received.

Officer Parvez said police had received a written complaint over the assault and would investigate before taking action.
