At least 32 students have been hospitalised reportedly after drinking water from a tubewell at a school in Tangail’s Nagarpur Upazila, spreading panic among other pupils.
Their identities could not be confirmed immediately, Nagarpur Police chief Md Jahurul Islam said, adding that their illness was reported around 10:30am on Tuesday.
The 32 students of Mahmudnagar High School are now receiving treatment at Nagarpur Upazila Health Complex and Tangail Medical College Hospital.
Mostafizur Rahman, acting headmaster of the school, said when the students were entering respective classrooms after 10:15am, many of them started vomiting.
Later, the 32 people were sent to the Upazila health facility one by one. Of them, two were sent to Tangail town for better treatment.
The school authorities said most of those affected are female students.
Mostafizur said a "white paste-like cream wrapped in a thin plastic bag" was found near the tubewell. “I think the water was intoxicated after someone poured the cream into the tubewell.”
Officer Jahurul said they are investigating the allegation.
