Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have taken extensive security and traffic management measures to ensure smooth travel for homebound people and to guarantee security at sacrificial animal markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, says DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed.
He spoke to the media on Monday afternoon after visiting the Gabtoli Bus Terminal and Gabtoli cattle market.
Mentioning that foolproof security measures have been taken around sacrificial cattle markets under the two city corporations, he said: “Visible police patrols, sub-control rooms, and watchtowers have been set up at every market. With the assistance of Bangladesh Bank, counterfeit currency detection machines will also be available at each market.”
He added that, in addition to uniformed police, plainclothes officers have been deployed round the clock to prevent mugging, counterfeit money circulation, and activities by criminal gangs such as Oggan Party, Molom Party (drugging or scam gangs.)
He further said, “Alongside money escort services for transporting cash, mobile banking facilities will also be available at the cattle markets.”
In addition to regular patrols, police mobile teams have been deployed at all times, and CCTV cameras are being used for monitoring.
“Special checkpoints have been set up at Dhaka’s entry points, and livestock-carrying vehicles are being monitored to ensure that no cattle trucks are diverted to unauthorised markets,” he said.
Regarding people travelling home for Eid, the police commissioner said, “As millions of people leave Dhaka in the days leading up to Eid, special traffic management measures have been taken on the roads along with enhanced security arrangements in different areas.”
Watchtowers have also been installed at bus terminals, railway stations, and launch terminals, and adequate police personnel have been deployed there.
He said, “Mobile courts are operating at terminals and cattle markets to prevent all kinds of crimes. Complaints regarding overcharging for tickets and carrying extra passengers are also being monitored.”
The leaseholder of the Gabtoli cattle market and general secretary of the Bus-Truck Owners’ Association, Md Hanif, said:
“There is heavy pressure at the Gabtoli cattle market centring around Eid-ul-Azha. We have enough volunteers. Even then, we are assisting the police in preventing various types of crimes.”
He also said that, with the help of volunteers and transport workers, efforts are being coordinated to ensure that buses carrying Eid holiday goers departing from Gabtoli Terminal can reach their destinations in an orderly manner.
