A college student has been taken into army custody in Faridpur for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SM) on Facebook.

The student, identified as Hridoy Pal, claims he does not use a mobile phone and insists that a fake account was created in his name to post the offensive content.

Boalmari Upazila Executive Officer, or UNO, Tanvir Hasan Chowdhury said Hridoy was handed over to the army personnel from Kadirdi Degree College around 3pm on Monday.

Earlier, residents from different areas, including Kadirdi of Satair union in the Upazila, had gathered in the college premises from 12:30pm, demanding strict action against the student.

Hridoy claims that the offensive post about Prophet Muhammad (SM) was made from a Facebook account hacked two years ago.

Residents reported that a Facebook post allegedly mocking the prophet was uploaded from the account of Hridoy, an 11th-grade student at Kadirdi Degree College.

College authorities brought the student to the principal’s office for questioning, but the news quickly spread, prompting students from nearby madrasas to gather and demand Hridoy's handover.

Meanwhile, some students and locals surrounded the principal’s office staging a protest. They vandalised classroom windows, flower pots, and several motorcycles.

Upon being informed, Satair Upazila Executive Officer, or UNO, Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Boalmari Police Station chief Md Golam Rasul tried to stop the protesters.

Later, the army personnel took control of the situation arriving at the scene.

Hridoy said police found no evidence of his involvement in the matter.
