A case has been filed against 150 people for allegedly obstructing newly elected MP Rumeen Farhana from paying tribute at the Shaheed Minar in Brahmanbaria and assaulting her supporters.

The majority of the accused are activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliate organisations.

Sarail Police chief Monjur Kader Bhuiyan said the case was filed on Sunday by Ahad, a supporter of Brahmanbaria‑2 MP Rumeen Farhana, who is known by a single name.

The complaint names five individuals, while 140–150 others remain unidentified.

Anwar Hossain, former general secretary of Sarail Upazila BNP, has been named as the lead accused.

Rumeen contested the parliamentary election as an independent candidate for the Brahmanbaria-2 seat (comprising Sarail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar) after failing to secure the BNP ticket.

She was subsequently expelled from the party for running against its sanctioned candidate.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred during the first watch of Language Martyrs' Day.

The MP reportedly faced stiff opposition from local BNP activists while attempting to lay a wreath at the Sarail Upazila Central Shaheed Minar.

The complaint alleges that a group of BNP activists, led by Anwar, directed "fake, fake" chants at Rumeen.

The situation escalated into a scuffle between the two groups.

The BNP members reportedly tore apart the MP’s floral wreath during the fight.

As tensions flared, Rumeen was forced to leave the monument under a security escort provided by her own supporters.

Repeated attempts to contact Anwar for comment went unanswered.
