The relationship between Bangladesh and China has transcended traditional frameworks to morph into a comprehensive, multidimensional strategic partnership, the spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has said.

Speaking at a press conference at Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guesthouse at 2pm local time on Friday, Mahdi Amin said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit had laid the foundation for a "long-term, strategic partnership" that had transformed bilateral ties into a "multi-dimensional relationship".

"In a very short period, the prime minister held separate meetings with China's three most powerful leaders -- President Xi Jinping, premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress," he said.

Mahdi said high-level delegations from both countries discussed all major aspects of bilateral relations.

"It has been decided that the foundation of this historic relationship will be mutual trust, respect, cooperation and, of course, the national interests of both countries."

He said 17 memorandums of understanding were signed during the visit.

"Based on this historic visit, a joint declaration containing 16 points is being prepared. It will outline the detailed understandings and areas of consensus reached during the visit."
