The government has declared online gambling, fraud, and deception as punishable offences under the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, introducing penalties that include imprisonment and hefty fines.
According to the ordinance, a person found guilty of gambling in cyberspace could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to Tk 10 million, or both.
The Ministry of Information announced the measures in a statement on Sunday, saying that gambling, fraud, and other forms of deception conducted online have now been formally criminalised.
The law specifies that if anyone creates or operates a portal, app, or device for gambling in cyberspace, participates in such gambling, provides assistance, encourages it, or engages in advertisements or promotions, either directly or indirectly, they will be considered guilty of the offence.
Offenders will face a maximum of two years in jail, or a fine not exceeding Tk 10 million, or both.
Similarly, if a person commits fraud using cyberspace, they will be identified as a criminal. The punishment in such cases will be up to two years in prison, a fine of up to Tk 2 million, or both.
If a person commits deception through cyberspace, the ordinance states that they will likewise be considered guilty. The penalty for such an offence will be up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5 million, or both.
The ministry added that law-enforcing agencies have already stepped up monitoring of such activities.
To curb such crimes and ensure cyber security, it urged the public to remain vigilant.
