The government has appointed Belayet Hossain, a BNP leader, as chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) for a year.
According to an order issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday, Belayet, an engineer, is to relinquish any professional, business, or employment ties with government, semi-government, private institutions, or organisations during his tenure.
The government also cancelled the remaining term of Nurul Karim, who had been serving as CDA chairman since Sept 2, 2024, under a three-year appointment.
Belayet, who has been appointed to lead the planning and development agency for Bangladesh's second-largest city, is a former joint convenor of the BNP's Chattogram North district unit.
He had sought the party's nomination for the Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) constituency in the February election.
He was involved in the BNP's student wing Jatiotabadi Chatradal during his student years and later joined the main party.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Belayet said: "As a grassroots worker, I am grateful to my party and to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for recognising me."
Belayet said he would work to implement the government's plans for Chattogram, a coastal city characterised by its hills, sea, rivers and plains, and would seek advice from stakeholders in carrying out his responsibilities.
Addressing the city's housing challenges would be among his top priorities, he said.
"I want to help build the port city of Chattogram into a planned, modern city comparable to other developed cities around the world. My goal is to make it a green city," Hossain said.
He said he is scheduled to assume office on Sunday.
