Dipu Sana’s death — a life and its dreams brought to an end

Two years later, the investigation into her death is still dragging on, her husband says

The death of Dipu Sana alias Dipanwita Biswas brought to an end a life and all dreams of a family two years ago.

Dipu was an assistant director at the Bangladesh Bank. She had a three-year-old son with her husband Tarun Kumar Biswas.

Dipu died after being hit by a concrete block that fell from an under-construction site in Dhaka, while walking back home after a day’s work.

Grieving the loss of his wife, Tarun lamented: “We were moving forward with dreams — of buying a car, building a home. Every dream came to a full stop.”

The incident occurred on Jan 10, 2024, at Dhaka’s Siddheswari. Tarun filed a murder case at Ramna Model Police Station the next day.

The case was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police. A DB inspector was assigned for reinvestigation after the initial investigation was found inadequate by the plaintiff.

The DB police were scheduled to submit the investigation report on Thursday but failed to do so. The court has now set Mar 5 as the date for submitting the report.

"The police say they haven’t found any clue of murder, and that’s why they submitted the final report. But we want to know the truth. That’s why we objected to the finding of the first investigation,” said Tarun.

“The court has directed the DB police to reinvestigate. Investigators come and go, but the investigation never seems to end," he added.

Tarun demands justice if a deliberate act is behind the death of her wife.

“A few days ago, someone died when a rod hit him in Gulshan. Before that, someone died after being hit by something under the metro rail,” said Tarun.

He believes that if Dipu’s case had been properly handled, the recent accidents might not have occurred.

“Everyone would have been a little more cautious," he said.

The loss of a parent brings immense suffering to the rest of the family, Tarun said.

"Our son has a speech delay and minor autism. We are trying to take good care of him and he is undergoing treatment. But still, the absence of his mother is deeply felt."
