Bangladesh has registered 464 murder and 666 rape cases since the BNP-led government took up office, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
Disclosing the estimates in the parliament on Tuesday, he said 1,134 suspects were arrested in the cases, but 11 secured bail in murder cases and 71 in rape charges.
Of the arrestees, 604 are murder suspects and 530 were named in rape cases.
He was responding to a starred tabled question from the Opposition MP from the Cumilla-4 constituency Md Abul Hasnat, well-known as Hasnat Abdullah.
Hasnat, also a leader of the National Citizen Party, queried about the proceedings and latest updates of the rape and murder cases filed over the last two and a half months.
Salahuddin said the cases are being investigated very intensively to ensure strict punishment for all those responsible for serious crimes like murder and rape.
Those against whom sufficient evidence has been found were arrested and produced before court, he said, adding that investigators have made “significant progress” in the cases.
"The process of collecting proper evidence and filing charge sheets quickly is under way," the home minister told the House.
