The Election Commission has extended the deadline for postal voting registration by a week.
On Sunday, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said Bangladeshi expatriates would have until Dec 25 to register using the postal voting app. Those who are eligible for postal voting despite staying inside Bangladesh will get 15 days to sign up.
The Postal Vote BD app was launched on Nov 18. The EC had earlier fixed it until Dec 18 to get registered on the app.
About 125,000 Bangladeshis have already registered using the app.
As many as 123,501 Bangladeshi expatriates have registered as of Monday, including 100,700 males. The highest 18,000 people have registered from the USA. Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy also have significant Bangladeshi expatriates registered to participate in the election.
The registered voters can also take part in the referendum, which is scheduled to be held on the same day as the parliamentary election.
Besides expatriates, government staff, people on election duty and in prison can register using the app. The people under the three categories would get 15 days after the announcement of the election schedule to get registered.
The election schedule is expected in the second week of December.
NID corrections in seven fields will remain temporarily suspended as part of finalising the voter list. Some correction services -- such as updating educational qualifications and, in particular, changing mobile numbers due to issues related to tax returns -- have been allowed.
The seven fields in which corrections are suspended are voter’s name, father’s name, mother’s name, profession, date of birth, voter’s address, and photo.
The EC’s NID Wing has also issued a circular allowing services on a limited scale for urgent medical treatment, studying abroad, obtaining passports and visas, and employment-related needs.
