A fire at Zaman Tower, a multi-storey building at Purana Paltan's Culvert Road that erupted on Wednesday morning, has been brought under control, the Fire Service and Civil Defence said.
The Fire Service was informed around 5:35am on Wednesday that a fire had broken out on the 4th and 5th floors of the commercial bloc, said Anwarul Islam, media cell an officer at the Central Media Cell of the Fire Service.
The first firefighting vehicle reached the scene within five minutes. Gradually, a total of 14 units of firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
However, nine of them participated in the firefighting effort and doused the flames at 7:35am. The Fire Service staff rescued two people from the scene.
The fire crew were engaged in 'damping down' at the building around 8am, Anwarul said.
"Damping down" refers to the Fire Service’s process of thoroughly checking the site and ensuring that no remaining flames or embers reignite.
