A legal notice has been served on Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, calling for uninterrupted mobile network coverage and call services at metro rail stations and on trains in Dhaka.

The notice says weak or unavailable signals are leaving passengers unable to make emergency calls or causing calls to drop during journeys.

HM Rashidul Islam Rashed, general secretary of the BUBT Lawyers Association, sent the notice on Wednesday "in the public interest".

It was addressed to the managing director of metro rail operator DMTCL.

Lawyer Rashed Zaman said the notice called on DMTCL to allow Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi Axiata to install mobile network infrastructure in Metro Rail areas and provide them with the facilities needed to do so.

The notice said around 400,000 passengers use the metro rail every day and that poor network coverage at stations and on moving trains was causing serious inconvenience.

DMTCL has been asked to take the necessary steps within 15 days and inform the sender in writing.

The notice said legal action, including a writ petition in the High Court in the public interest, would be taken if the demand was not addressed.
