Freedom fighter Kazi Ashraf Humayun Bangal has warned against attempts to downplay Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s role in the Liberation War, saying the history of 1971 is impossible to tell without him.
A commander of the top-tier Kaderia force’s “Hanuman Company”, Ashraf described as “foolish” anyone seeking to distort the true, impartial history of the war.
Speaking during the launch of the third volume of “Bangladesh, Penned in Blood”, a Liberation War-based compilation published by bdnews24.com.
Two earlier volumes have already been released.

The third volume brings together over 500 photographs from the language movement through the Liberation War under a single cover.
Ashraf said, “I am seeing attempts to belittle Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s contribution to the Liberation War. But without Sheikh Mujib, the history of 1971 cannot be told -- this is the truth.”
He added, “Falsehoods cannot survive. Truth endures in history. Every contribution must be acknowledged, in proportion to its real impact.”
During the war, the armed operations of the Hanuman Company struck fear into the hearts of the Pakistani forces. Rewards were even announced for capturing him alive or dead.
Ashraf stressed that the history of the Liberation War is not the property of any ruling party.
“It is wrong for whoever comes to power to rewrite history to suit themselves. Some still dream of turning this country back into Pakistan. That will never happen. But those attempting it are essentially trying to destroy the nation.”
He recalled the Mar 7, 1971 speech of Sheikh Mujib: “He said, ‘This struggle is the struggle for independence. This struggle is the struggle for liberation’. After that speech, people began preparing for war immediately. They did not wait for any other call.”
Looking ahead, Ashraf urged the preservation of historical truth. “Those in power may try to reinterpret history, but the country will regress if we follow them. We must move forward with the truth.
“Truth is truth; lies are lies. If the new generation learns false history, they are doomed. They must know the true history of the Liberation War.”
He thanked bdnews24.com for publishing the compilation, calling it “a courageous effort” that brings the impartial history of the Liberation War to a much wider audience.
