Panic has spread in Chandpur’s Faridganj after a four-storey building tilted towards a neighbouring structure, prompting authorities to order residents of both buildings to evacuate immediately.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon on Mirpur Road in Ward No. 2 of the Faridganj municipal town.
According to locals, the four-storey building owned by Delwar Hossain has tilted by several inches towards another of the same height owned by Akhtar Patwari.
Residents noticed the tilt earlier in the day, triggering concern in the locality.
Locals said the land had once been used for paddy cultivation and the buildings were constructed nearly two decades ago.
Officials from the Upazila administration, municipal authorities and Fire Service and Civil Defence visited the site after receiving the information.
Maha Gazi, manager of the neighbouring building, said they first noticed the structure leaning slightly in the morning.
Faridganj Fire Service Commander Kamrul Islam said residents were asked to vacate both buildings considering the safety risks.
Al Amin, a designer at the town, said: “The condition of the structures will be assessed and necessary steps will be taken afterwards.”
Faridganj Upazila and Municipal administrator Sentu Kumar Barua said a four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
The committee includes the sub-divisional officer of the Public Works Department, the municipality’s executive engineer, the Upazila engineer and the Fire Service station commander.
“The committee will review the matter after Eid and submit a detailed report. Necessary action will be taken based on its findings,” he said.
