Police have detained four people conducting a flash march for the Awami League, which is barred from all political activities, in Dhaka’s Mohakhali.
They were detained from a procession held in Muktijoddha Goli near the Mohakhali Institute of Public Health around 1:30pm on Tuesday.
When law enforcers gave chase to catch the others, they set off improvised explosives and fled, said Banani Police Inspector Md Mehedi Hasan.
The arrestees have been identified as Government Bangla College Chhatra League activists Aslam Mia and Ashiqul Islam, and Awami League activists Mahfuzur Rahman Siam and Monir Hossain.
Inspector Mehedi said, “Around 1:30pm, 30 to 40 people gathered for a procession. When Banani Police reached the spot after the incident was reported, the marchers dispersed and tried to escape. A local crowd beat one person and handed him over to the police, while the police arrested three others.”
Police say that those gathered tried to hold a procession under the banner of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League to mark Aug 15. A banner has been recovered from the arrestees.
He also said that evidence of a detonated improvised explosive device has been recovered from the scene.
Awami League chief and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country for India on Aug 5, 2024, in the face of a student-led mass movement.
Three days afterwards, an interim government took power. Top-level leaders, including former ministers and state ministers of the Awami League and influential members of parliament have been arrested since then.
Leaders of other parties in alliance with the Awami League have also been arrested.
Most of the remaining senior leaders of the Awami League are in hiding and do not attend regular political events.
Hasina and other Awami League leaders are on trial for crimes against humanity, including the killing of hundreds of people in the crackdown on a student movement, and all activities of the party have been banned until the trials are over.
However, there are occasional reports of Awami League activists conducting processions in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
Police say they have sometimes made arrests during these programmes.
