Two passengers have been killed and at least 25 others injured after one bus slammed into another on the Dhaka-Barishal Highway in Gopalganj.

The crash occurred around 12am on Thursday near Raghdi of Muksudpur Upazila, said Md Sohel Khan, a sub-inspector (SI) at Bhanga Highway Police Station.

The dead were identified as Amitabh Hawlader, 42, from Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali, and Md Kamal, 30, from Sherpur district.

SI Sohel said a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus travelling to Dhaka veered out of control and struck the Raghdi Bridge.

A Himel Simanta Paribahan bus travelling behind then crashed into the BRTC vehicle.

Several passengers from both buses were hurt in the impact.

Police, members of Fire Service and Civil Defence, and local residents carried out rescue operations and sent the injured to Rajoir Upazila Health Complex and other hospitals.

Amitabh and Kamal later died while being taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Another critically injured passenger has been transferred to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

The Highway Police officer said the process of handing over the bodies to relatives is under way after completion of legal formalities.
