Two Indian nationals have been detained with more than 5kg of kush at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport, just two days after another similar seizure.

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) detained the pair on Monday afternoon, according to a statement issued on Monday night.

The detainees were identified as 36-year-old Sanowar Ali and Imtiaz Ahmed, also 36, both from North 24 Parganas in India.

The DNC said the two arrived in Dhaka on a Thai Airways flight. Acting on a tip-off, officers took positions at the airport at 1pm and detained them at the Green Channel in the arrivals hall.

A search of their travel trolleys uncovered 5.04kg of kush, three litres of foreign liquor and 24 Indian sarees, allegedly concealed beneath the clothing.

Officers also seized two Indian passports, four smartphones, $400, 1,170 Thai baht and an equivalent amount of Indian rupees.

The DNC said a case had been filed against the pair under the Narcotics Control Act at Airport Police Station. Inspector Shahriya Sharmin of the DNC’s airport circle filed the case.

Several Bangladeshi associates have also been identified and will be brought under the law soon, the DNC said.

The airport unit has seized three kush consignments in the past week, arresting three Indian nationals and filing three cases.

One was caught with 3kg on Saturday, while another 4.18kg shipment was seized last Tuesday. The suspects in all three incidents arrived on Thai Airways flights.
