A fake news website that uses a logo nearly identical to that of bdnews24.com is being used to spread a fake interview with bdnews24.com’s Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi.
It also features a fake AI-generated video featuring the bdnews24.com logo that says businessman Moosa bin Shamsher is launching an alleged investment platform.
The fake news item says that Shamsher is launching a cryptocurrency investment project called Quantum AI alongside the Bangladesh government, with the headline: “SECRET SUCCESS: Over 200,000 Bangladeshi citizens have achieved financial independence with a new investment platform, earning up to ৳860K per month!”
A spokesperson for bdnews24.com said, “It is clear from the way it looks that they are running a financial scam. They are using our logo to commit fraud. They are even using the name and picture of our editor-in-chief for something that is completely untrue. The interview is completely false and fabricated.”
The fake interview and video started circulating on Facebook in the form of sponsored posts from Monday. Several IDs are being used for this purpose.
The bdnews24.com logo has been used on the video. bdnews24.com does not use the logo in this manner on its own videos.
On Oct 12, 2021, Shamsher was interrogated for three hours at the office of the police’s Detective Branch. A video from the time was used, his speech was changed, and the footage altered to promote the fake investment platform.
The website, created in the style of the English version of bdnews24.com to promote the fake interview, has clear inconsistencies as well. Instead of the proper date on the top left, the date is written as “December 15, 2025 February 25, 2025”.
The news items running on the ticker are from Feb 25 of this year. This makes it appear as if the fraud was conducted by stealing from the Feb 25 version of the site.
Although the scammers use the bdnews24.com logo, the URL for the site is https://quantex.ink/. A Google search of websites with similar names shows another fake investment platform is being promoted by creating a fake website named after Prothom Alo, a leading Bangla daily.
The domain information website 'Who.Is' says that the domain name quantex.ink was registered on Jul 8 this year, with a validity of one year. The registration information is secret, but its address is shown as Reykjavik, Iceland.
Previously, other fake news items had used graphics similar to those of bdnews24.com or its logo in order to make fake reports on Chief Advisor Muhamad Yunus, Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed, actress Sadia Ayman, as well as Summit Group Chairman Mohammad Aziz Khan. Each time, they were shared from a different Facebook page.
A spokesperson for bdnews24.com said, "Our logo is being used repeatedly for such fraud. We will take action in this regard."
