A Dhaka court has sentenced two men to death for the murder of Tejgaon College student Ikram Hossain Molla in 2023.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz delivered the verdict on Sunday, according to court official Md Riaz Hossain.
The convicts are Shanto Mia, a friend of the victim, and Shanto’s associate Abu Siddique.
They were also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000 each for concealing the body, with an additional three months of imprisonment in default of payment.
Shanto remains absconding. The court issued a conviction warrant along with an arrest warrant against him.
Siddique was produced before the court and sent to jail after the verdict was announced.
According to the case dossier, Ikram had invested Tk 200,000 with his friend Shanto in a brick and sand business and was to receive a monthly return. However, payments stopped six months before the killing.
Investigators alleged that Shanto, who had developed a drug addiction, was misusing the business funds. Tensions grew after Ikram informed Shanto’s family about his addiction and demanded the return of his money.
The two fell out over the issue. At one stage, Shanto allegedly conspired with another friend, Siddique, to kill him, according to the prosecution.
Ikram went missing on May 4, 2023, after leaving home. When he could not be located, a general diary (GD) was filed with Khilkhet Police Station the following day. His body was recovered on May 6 from the Patira Balur Math area of Khilkhet.
Ikram’s father, Kabir Hossain Molla, later filed a murder case against unidentified suspects with Khilkhet Police Station.
Following an investigation, police submitted a chargesheet against the two accused on Nov 26 of that year.
Charges were framed on Feb 29, 2024, and the trial began. The court recorded the testimonies of 17 of the 27 listed witnesses before delivering its verdict.
