A former Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader has been shot dead in Khulna, with his leg veins severed.

The incident took place around 1:30pm on Friday outside house in the West Maheshwarpasha, said Daulatpur Police Station chief Mir Atahar Ali.

The victim, 38-year-old Mahbubur Rahman Molla, was the former vice-president of the Jubo Dal’s Daulatpur unit.

Citing locals, Atahar said Mahbubur was cleaning his car outside his house when three men arrived on a motorcycle and attacked him. They shot him and slashed both of his legs. One of the attackers wore a helmet while the other two did not.

Locals rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept at the hospital morgue.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Tajul Islam said, “We have recovered five bullet casings from the scene. He was shot in the head and other parts of the body, and his tendons were slashed to ensure death.”

“We believe the murder was a result of local turf rivalry. We’ve identified some people who may have been involved and are currently verifying the details,” he added.

On Feb 18, Mahbubur's photo went viral on social media, showing him holding a machete during clashes at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) over the suspension of student politics. He was expelled from the Jubo Dal the next day.
