A vehicle belonging to the Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has come under attack after a police vehicle was set on fire ahead of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) July procession programme.

The driver of the UNO’s car was injured in the incident, which occurred in the Kansur area of the Gopalganj-Tekerhat road on Wednesday, according to UNO M Rokibul Hasan.

Rokibul said locals had blocked the road around 11am by setting up barricades, halting traffic. When he arrived at the scene, his vehicle had already been attacked, leaving his driver, Moin, injured.

Earlier in the morning, a police vehicle was set on fire and vandalised in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. Police have blamed the banned organisation Chhatra League for the incident.

“As part of the July procession, the central leaders of the National Citizen Party are scheduled to arrive at the municipal park in Gopalganj town,” said Sajedur Rahman, chief of Gopalgaj Sadar Police Station.

“Supporters of Ataur Rahman Piyal, the general secretary of the district unit of the banned Chhatra League, set fire to a police vehicle and vandalised it to disrupt the march. Police rushed to the spot after the incident was reported,” he added.

No casualties have been reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, protests and a road blockade were also reported in the Kathi area along the Gopalganj-Kotalipara road in the Sadar Upazila.

Elsewhere in Kotalipara, Army personnel have been deployed with armoured vehicles at the entrance to Bangabandhu's mausoleum to prevent any untoward incidents in the area.
