Vegetable prices ease slightly, meat market remains out of grasp

Chicken prices have gone up with beef and eggs following

Vegetable prices, which had surged at the start of Ramadan, have begun to ease slightly, though the meat market remains unchanged.

Visits to kitchen markets in Jatrabari, Shonir Akhra, Motijheel and Segunbagicha in the capital show that prices of cucumber, round and long aubergines, carrot, lemon, tomato and green chilli have fallen compared to last week.

Potato, hyacinth bean, cauliflower, radish, turnip, green peas, bitter gourd and papaya are being sold at previous rates.

At Segunbagicha kitchen market, long aubergines are now selling at Tk 70-80 per kg. At the start of Ramadan, they were sold at Tk 110-120 per kg.

Although the price of long aubergines has declined over the past week, round aubergines have not seen a sharp drop. Previously sold at Tk 120 per kg, they are now priced at Tk 100-110 per kg in Segunbagicha.

At the beginning of Ramadan, a set of four lemons was sold at Tk 120 to Tk 180. On Friday, lemons were available at Tk 60 per set in Segunbagicha.

Among salad vegetables, the prices of cucumbers and carrots have fallen. Cucumbers, which were sold at Tk 120 per kg last week, are now being sold at Tk 70 per kg in Jatrabari. Carrots are retailing at Tk 60 per kg.

Tomato prices have seen the sharpest drop. After suddenly rising to Tk 60-70 per kg last week, tomatoes were seen selling at Tk 30-40 per kg in Shonir Akhra on Friday.

Lower-quality tomatoes were being sold for as little as Tk 20 per kg.

Other items remain unchanged from last week in this market: hyacinth beans at Tk 50 per kg, papaya at Tk 30, local onions at Tk 40, cauliflower and turnips at Tk 40, and radish at Tk 30 per kg.

In Segunbagicha, green peas are still selling at Tk 100-110 per kg, while larger hybrid varieties are priced at Tk 60-70 per kg.

There has been no change in the price of hyacinth beans either, with vendors on Friday asking Tk 40-60 per kg depending on quality.

Potatoes continue to sell at Tk 25 per kg. Green chillies are now priced at Tk 100 per kg, down from Tk 160 last week.

The heat seen in the meat market since the start of Ramadan refuses to come down.

In Segunbagicha kitchen market, broiler chicken is selling at Tk 200-220 per kg.

Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 300-320 per kg in Jatrabari.

Eggs remain unchanged at Tk 120 per dozen.

Beef is being sold at Tk 800 per kg in Shonir Akhra, the same rate as last week. Before Ramadan, it was priced at Tk 750 per kg.
