A senior bank official has died at a drug rehabilitation centre in Bogura, with his family alleging he was beaten to death.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night at “Mayer Ashroy Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Centre” in Sabgram of Sadar Upazila, according to Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mostafa Monjur.

He said a staff member of the centre has been taken into police custody for questioning.

The victim, Samiul Hasan Shuvo, 33, was a senior officer at Janata Bank’s Dupchanchia branch in Bogura.

Shuvo’s brother-in-law ATM Farhad Sohag said he had been admitted to the centre on Feb 13 on a doctor’s advice due to mental health concerns.

He claimed Shuvo was not addicted to drugs. About a month ago, he had been a victim of robbery and was beaten during the incident. After that, he became mentally distressed and suffered trauma.

On medical advice, he was kept at the centre for observation and treatment, Farhad added.

“On Tuesday around 10pm, the rehabilitation centre suddenly called to say Shuvo’s condition had deteriorated and that he had been taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. We were asked to go there. When we arrived, we found him dead,” he said.

Shuvo’s cousin Tapas said, “I spoke to Shuvo a few days ago. He seemed well and normal. We were not informed of any serious physical illness. At the hospital, we saw multiple marks on his body.

“There were injury marks on his right arm and the right side of his ribs. We believe he was beaten to death.”

ASP Mostafa said police visited the scene and the hospital after receiving the information. CCTV footage has been collected and is being reviewed.

“It is too early to draw conclusions. The inquest report and postmortem examination will determine the exact cause of death,” he said.

He added that a staff member of the rehabilitation centre, identified only as Humayun, has been taken into custody for questioning. He had taken Shuvo to the hospital and was detained from there.

Efforts are under way to obtain a statement from the centre authorities.
