Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Iftekharuzzaman has met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The meeting took place on Thursday afternoon at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat, according to Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon.
He said, “The executive director of TIB met with honourable Prime Minister Mr Tarique Rahman. They discussed necessary measures to make the country free from corruption.”
“The honourable prime minister stated that his government’s policy is to maintain a strict stance against corruption.”
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani was also present during the meeting.
Following the meeting, Iftekharuzzaman told the media: “We have provided the government with some specific recommendations regarding good governance and anti-corruption measures. The prime minister has taken these matters very positively and assured us of their implementation.”
“Especially, we suggested that institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) need urgent reform and restructuring.”
He further said, “The current government wants to send a message to the world that it is uncompromising and committed to the fight against corruption. As part of this effort, TIB has proposed hosting the 2028 International Anti-Corruption Conference in Bangladesh to enhance the country’s image globally.”
“We sought the prime minister’s cooperation in organising this international conference in Bangladesh. He assured us that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.”
The TIB ED said, “The International Anti-Corruption Conference is held every two years. This year’s conference will take place in the Dominican Republic. Previously, only three Asian countries—Malaysia, Thailand, and Korea—have hosted the event.”
“We believe that 2028 would be the right time for Bangladesh to host the conference. The prime minister has agreed in principle. If the Cabinet approves, Bangladesh will make efforts to host it.”
