Bangladesh has begun a seven-day public holiday for the Eid-ul-Azha festivals.

Alongside courts and offices, banks are also closed from Monday and will reopen on Jun 1.

However, some bank branches in garment industry areas will remain open on May 25 and 26 (Monday and Tuesday) to facilitate the payment of salaries and bonuses to workers in the country's main export earning industry.

Branches of commercial banks located in the garment industry-related areas of Dhaka Metropolitan City, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Bhaluka, Narayanganj and Chattogram will also remain open on a limited basis on May 25 and 26 (Monday and Tuesday) to facilitate the payment of salaries, bonuses and other allowances to workers and employees in the industry before Eid.

Instructions have also been sent out to continue import-export activities on a limited scale at bank branches, sub-branches and booths in land, sea, and airports.

Government offices, courts and all bank branches were open on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the long break, despite Saturday falling on the weekend.

Despite the rush of bank transactions, most government offices had a relaxed, festive atmosphere ahead of the break.

According to the notice from the government, all public, semi-public, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices in the country will be closed from May 25 to May 31 on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
