Activists of Inqilab Moncho have cleared the Shahbagh intersection blockade, ending the demonstration staged after clashes with police outside the chief advisor’s official residence.

The protesters left the road about an hour after Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber made an announcement on Facebook Live around 9pm.

Earlier, from 5:15pm, the group had gathered at Shahbagh as part of their ongoing movement demanding justice for the killing of their leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

Their blockade brought vehicular movement in the area to a halt, triggering severe traffic congestion on surrounding roads.

Around 8pm, police fired tear gas at the demonstrators, dispersing them briefly. The protesters later regrouped at the intersection.

Announcing the end of the blockade, Plabon Tariq, an organiser of July Oikya, said: “Hadi and his likes have been bloodied again today. Our demands were not unreasonable. [Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus] should leave a letter with the United Nations seeking justice for Osman Hadi.

“We went to the [State Guest House Jamuna] out of desperation. We did not go there to create conflict. We waited all night, but not even a clerk came to ask about us.”

Plabon added: “We staged a sit-in at the InterContinental Dhaka and did not create any disorder there.

“After Hadi, Jaber used to hold this gathering. Yet we are being blamed for trying to sabotage the election. Police attacked us unjustly and injured Jaber.”

“We have sat with the administration, but we will continue the movement until justice is met for Osman Hadi.”
