A police inspector has been withdrawn from duty for allegedly raping a 12-year-old child in Noakhali’s island Upazila of Hatia. Police say they are searching for the victim and her mother.
Khorshed Alam, officer-in-charge of the Jahazmara Police Investigation Centre in the Upazila, was withdrawn and attached to the district police lines after the child and her mother came forward with the allegation on Facebook Live on Saturday night, said Hatia Police Station chief Mohammad Kabir Hossain.
The child alleged on Facebook Live that the child's mother worked as a cook at the Jahazmara Police Investigation Centre. The child would also go there. She claims that Police Inspector Khorshed called the child to his house on the pretext of sweeping the house in her mother's absence and raped her.
The child's mother and brother were allegedly threatened with jail time if they told anyone about the incident. The child told her mother about the incident, but no one else out of fear. Later, when the child's mother informed two locals about the incident, they obtained their signatures on a white sheet of paper and promised to take action within two months.
The child's mother alleged that, even though she complained to the Hatia Circle Police Officer, no action was taken. She said, "I gave the case to the circle… but the case was not tried. Two people had us sign a white paper and said they would take action. Now I haven’t been able to go home for four months."
Hatia Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Nurul Anwar's mobile and WhatsApp numbers were called several times for a response, but he did not pick up.
Hatia Police Station chief Kabir said, "As far as I know, the Hatia Circle assistant superintendent of police investigated the matter based on a verbal complaint about three months ago and did not find any truth to the claim. Since then, the child and her mother have not been living in the area."
Khorshed was withdrawn and attached to the District Police Lines after the child and her mother's statement was posted on Facebook on Saturday. Kabir said that the matter will be investigated and further action taken.
