A young man has died in a lightning strike in Sherpur’s Sadar Upazila.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon in Satpakia Madhyapara of Charpakshimari Union, said Upazila administrator (UNO) Asma Binte Rafique.

The deceased, Mizan Mia, 21, was a native of the area. He worked as a delivery man for a private organisation.

Charpakshimari Union Panel Chairman Sohel Mia said, Mizan's mother died a few days ago. He was supposed to meet a girl for a marriage proposal on Thursday evening.

Locals said Mizan was seriously injured in a sudden lightning strike when he went out of his house during the rain on Thursday afternoon. He was rescued and taken to Jamalpur General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

UNO Asma said, “We have spoken to the families of the deceased. They have been asked to submit a written application for assistance. If they apply, the necessary assistance will be provided by the government.”

“Usually, Tk 20,000 to 25,000 is given in such cases. If the family is very poor, food assistance will also be provided.”

Sherpur Sadar Police chief Md Sohel Rana said the body of the deceased was handed over to the family without a postmortem as requested by them.
