Dr Kamal Hossain has shown signs of recovery from pneumonia and has been moved to a private cabin at Square Hospital in Dhaka, his party said.

The 88-year-old senior lawyer and Gono Forum founder was admitted on Friday after developing pneumonia, which left him “physically weak”.

Gono Forum’s General Secretary Mizanur Rahman said on Sunday night: “Dr Kamal Hossain’s condition has improved compared with before. This afternoon, he was transferred from the HDU to a private cabin. I visited the hospital and checked on his health.”

Earlier, he had asked people to pray for Dr Kamal’s full recovery.

He last appeared in public on Wednesday at Khaleda Zia’s funeral at Manik Mia Avenue.

He later felt physically unwell, party officials said, after he was reportedly denied entry through the VIP gate.

This is not his first recent hospitalisation. On Sept 9, he was admitted to hospital with age-related complications and later underwent surgery for a urinary bladder issue.

Dr Kamal, who chaired the committee that drafted the original Constitution of Bangladesh in 1972, served in the post-independence government as law minister, foreign minister and minister for petroleum and natural resources.

He is also internationally known as a legal advisor and arbitrator, including work for several governments on petroleum policy and related legal matters.

Dr Kamal founded Gono Forum in 1992 and stepped back from active politics on Oct 27, 2023.

In 2024, he was made the party’s emeritus president.
