Vegetable prices sluggish, protein punches pockets

Onion prices remain stable for nearly a month

Vegetable prices in Dhaka have remained largely stable, while eggs, fish and meat continue to sell at relatively high rates.

Onions provide relief to consumers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, an essential cooking ingredient whose prices have not increased.

Visits to several markets in the capital on Friday found onions selling at Tk 40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.

The price has remained at this level for nearly a month.

However, onions from Pabna were selling at higher rates in Jatrabari and Rayerbagh kitchen markets.

The smoother, shinier variety was being sold at Tk 50 per kg.

According to daily market data from the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), onion prices during the same period in 2025 ranged between Tk 50 and Tk 60 per kg.

During the first week of the Bengali summer month of Jaistha, most vegetables were selling at previous rates, with stable supply keeping prices largely unchanged.

At Shonir Akhra kitchen market, ridge gourd and sponge gourd were selling at Tk 80 per kg, along with green papaya.

The prices remained unchanged from the previous week, although these vegetables had risen from Tk 30 to Tk 80 per kg over the last two months.

Hybrid cucumbers were selling at Tk 60 per kg and local varieties at Tk 70 in the same market.

Round aubergine and snake gourd were selling at Tk 80 per kg, while long aubergines cost Tk 60.

Prices of these vegetables have remained unchanged over the past week.

Medium-sized bottle gourds were selling for Tk 40 each at Segunbagicha kitchen market. Newly harvested pumpkins were also available at the same price.

Okra prices fell to Tk 30 per kg at the market, down from Tk 40 the previous week, marking a decline for the second consecutive week.

Tomato prices remained high at Tk 80 per kg due to the seasonal decline in supply, while pointed gourd continued to sell at Tk 60 to Tk 70 per kg.

Long beans were selling at Tk 60 per kg in Jatrabari, down Tk 20 from the previous week.

Green chilli prices also dropped by Tk 20 to Tk 80 per kg after rising to Tk 100 last week.

Bitter gourd remained at Tk 60 per kg, teasel gourd at Tk 100 and snake gourd at Tk 80, while imported carrots were selling at Tk 180 per kg.

Potatoes continued to sell between Tk 25 and Tk 30 per kg.

In local vegetable carts, Diamond potatoes were also being sold at Tk 100 for six kg, a price that has remained unchanged for several months.

Beef prices remained steady at Tk 800 per kg at Segunbagicha market, while reaching Tk 820 in some areas.

Broiler chicken prices stood at Tk 180 per kg in Jatrabari and Segunbagicha, while Sonali chicken sold between Tk 340 and Tk 350 per kg.

Poultry prices have remained stable over the last two weeks.

Mutton was selling at Tk 1,200 per kg in Jatrabari, while goat meat cost Tk 1,100.

Egg prices also remained unchanged, with a dozen selling at Tk 140 and four eggs at Tk 50 in retail markets. However, some neighbourhood shops were selling eggs at Tk 150 per dozen.

Carp varieties including common carp and silver carp were selling at Tk 160 per kg in Jatrabari, up from Tk 150 a week earlier.

Medium-sized tilapia sold between Tk 120 and Tk 150 per kg, while larger fish were selling at Tk 200 to Tk 220.

Mola fish remained at Tk 400 per kg in Segunbagicha, while smaller varieties were selling at Tk 240 per kg in Jatrabari.

Pangasius catfish was selling between Tk 170 and Tk 200 per kg, bata fish at Tk 250 to Tk 300 and olive barb at Tk 250.

Depending on size, stinging catfish was selling between Tk 200 and Tk 350 per kg.

Farmed butter fish was selling at Tk 400 per kg at Shonir Akhra market, while butter fish caught from natural water bodies was priced at Tk 600.

Mystus tengra prices remained unchanged at Tk 500 per kg.
